Backgammon ‘on the front foot’

Backgammon has been taken to “a new level” thanks to a recent tournament from PartyGammon.com, it has been suggested.

The event, the PartyGammon.com Million, has taken a previously unknown group of skill gamers “into the mainstream”, according to a spokesman from the site.

Online Casino News reports that German backgammon player Andreas Maertens was the eventual winner of the tournament, taking home the majority of the $1.2 million prize pool.

The competition winner beat Lasse Hiorth Madsen 23-22 in a closely contested final.

“We saw the huge rise of the internet qualifier in poker and, remarkably, at the very first attempt we have seen online qualifiers compete and beat the world’s best players at backgammon,” said the spokesman.

He added that the introduction of online aces could change the game of backgammon forever, much like poker.

The PartyGammon.com Million was the world’s inaugural million dollar backgammon tournament and was held at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in The Bahamas.
