Britney voted the most desirable celebrity poker opponent

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Britney Spears would be the celebrity opponent of choice for poker players across the globe if they had to play anyone in a must-win Texas Hold’em tournament.

In a survey, commissioned by the online poker site UltimateBet, 46 per cent of the 12,000 online gamers questioned chose the 25 year-old singer, citing her recent bizarre activities as evidence of weak poker playing potential.

Commenting on the findings, George MacLean, a spokesman for the website, said: “Given her erratic behaviour, it’s evident that most folks consider Britney a fish easy to beat.”

He added: “What’s fascinating is that most players are willing to endure staring at a bald Britney in order to win the tournament.”

Lindsay Lohan came second in the poll with 21 per cent players choosing her as their ideal opponent, while 15 per cent chose Paris Hilton and 7 per cent Sienna Miller.

The publication of the survey’s results came as UltimateBet revealed the line up for the VH1 Classic Rock n’ Roll Celebrity Poker Tournament, to be held in Las Vegas.

Two of its online gamers will play alongside stars from the music world including Pantera’s Vinnie Paul and ZZ Tops’s Dusty Hill.

Coin-free slots for Vegas casinos

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

The Casino operator Mohegan Sun has announced that it is to introduce the latest gaming technology into two of its venues, making all slot machines coin free.

From the beginning of May, gamers at the Casino of the Earth and Casino of the Sky in Las Vegas will be required to use paper tickets when on the slots, with the tickets allowing them to move independently between machines and cash-in on their winnings more easily.

Commenting on the development, Frank Neborsky, vice president of slot operations at Mohegan Sun, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to incorporate this new technology throughout the new casinos and elevate our guest experience on the gaming floor.

“Our guests will enjoy the cleanliness of no longer handling coins or tokens, while benefiting from the enhanced customer service and convenience that a ticket in, ticket out environment offers.”

With the additional benefits of incorporating the new technology including the freeing up of space for new gaming machines and retail outlets, as will be the case at the Mohegan Sun casinos, other venues are likely to keep a close watch on the effectiveness of the initiative.

West Virginia table gaming proposals gathering momentum

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

The introduction of table gaming at West Virginia racecourses is looking more likely as the proposed legislation advanced through the state’s House of Delegates to the Senate last week.Lawmakers within the state are pushing forward the bill to permit blackjack, craps and roulette at the Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort, and the Wheeling Island racetrack and Gaming Centre as well as at two other tracks. Both supporters and opponents of the initiative have cited the launch of slot casinos in neighbouring Pennsylvania as a major factor for building momentum behind the proposal. While West Virginia had previously enjoyed a relative gaming monopoly in the region, earning $5.2 billion in revenue since 1995, though this has come under threat with the developments in Pennsylvania.

West Virginia officials are predicting a decline in revenue generated by slot machines and see table gaming as the ideal solution to offset or minimise any losses.

The proposals are, however, dividing opinion within the state, though opponents of the initiative have admitted they are currently the underdogs after failing to get a state-wide referendum included as part of the house-passed bill.

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Former senator Alfonse D’Amato is currently in discussions with the Poker Players’ Alliance about becoming the group’s lobbyist and spokesperson, it has been revealed. The move comes as the PPA seeks a high-profile face in the world of federal politics and lobbying.

In a statement, the San Francisco-based group announced that they were looking for three-term senators with a love of poker, and Mr D’Amato fit the bill perfectly.

During his three terms representing New York in the Senate, D’Amato would regularly host poker nights at his office, playing against the likes of radio DJ Howard Stern and the high-profile Long Island lawyer Dominic Barbara.

Senators push for full casino smoking ban

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

New Jersey senators have moved to ban smoking completely in Atlantic City casinos. The initiative follows recent legislation in the city that only partially banned smoking in its 11 casinos through making them set up temporary enclosures for smoking areas.

The chair of the Senate’s health committee, Senator Joseph F Vitale is leading the fight to bring casinos in line with other public places in New Jersey and ban smoking totally.

“It’s time to save the lives of the thousands of casino workers who are at risk because of second hand smoke,” he said.

Should the proposals for a total ban be successful, Atlantic City would become the largest smoke-free gambling destination in the country.

While Atlantic City Council had earlier backed away from introducing a total smoking ban, contending that such a move would cut profits in the city by 20 per cent and bring about the loss of as many as 3,400 jobs, supporters of the move argue that the casinos would be able to effectively work around the legislation.

“Surely, the powerful and creative minds who built the colossal monuments of the gambling industry in Atlantic City can conjure up ways to keep luring the people to casinos without killing the help,” Senator Vitale stated.

Gambling could assist Kentucky schools

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Revenue generated through the introduction of casinos in Kentucky will help fund pre-school classes for 3 and 4 year-olds, if the Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear is elected, it has been revealed.A college scholarship program for students who remain working in the state after graduating will also be funded by this means, the Lexington lawyer announced as he unveiled his plans to create economic growth in Kentucky at a news conference.

Upon being elected, Beshear said that he would take advantage of a constitutional amendment allowing expanded gambling to generate a further $500 million for the state.

This would see casino gambling being introduced at Kentucky racetracks as well as the construction of several free-standing casinos.

Mr Beshear, a former lieutenant governor stated: “We will build Kentucky’s economy by investing in Kentucky’s own businesses and in its people.”

Since 2005, the state has lost 1,400 manufacturing jobs and has been near the bottom in per capita income rankings for decades.

UK set to encourage online gambling

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

UK finance minister Gordon Brown will announce plans to encourage foreign gaming operators to invest in UK online gambling sites, it has been revealed.According to a report published in the Daily Telegraph recently, overseas operators could be attracted by tax rates of as little as two to three per cent and be able to obtain a license to operate their sites within the UK while being based overseas.

Under the current Gambling Act, internet gaming groups will be able to relocate to Britain and obtain a license to operate in the country from September, though some operators have suggested that they would decline the opportunity should it mean they would have to pay a tax on gross winnings.

However, with the Remote Gaming Duty, set to be unveiled as part of the budget on March 21st, gambling firms will avoid paying Value Added Tax, the report stated.

The initiative comes as the UK government looks to the gambling the overseas gambling industry as a potential source of revenue.

Currently, PartyPoker, Ladbrokes and 888 Holdings are based in Gibraltar and are therefore exempt from taxation.
