Poker cheats jailed for 9 months

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Three poker cheats have pleaded guilty to cheating at play, with two of them being given nine-month prison sentences.

Found guilty under the 1846 Gaming Act at Southwark crown court, the group of poker criminals had used spy equipment to win around £250,000 ($490,318) in half a dozen London casinos.

The group filmed cards that were being dealt and sent the images to an outside van, which in turn relayed information to another member of the gang who was seated at the same table.

Players involved in the scam were found out when casino staff became suspicious of the winning run.

The game in which the fraudsters were rumbled was three-card poker, when the woman involved in the plot made a £3,520 profit after betting £2,500 in a session.

An online poker tool was launched last year to help protect players from card-game cheats.

PokerBodyguard, from Advanced Interactive Marketing, keeps a check on opponents’ histories and previous poker table activity.

Luck or skill best for poker?

Friday, January 12th, 2007

A jury in London is faced with the decision of whether poker is a game of luck or skill.

The online poker industry will be eyeing the landmark case at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where the jury will decide whether the chairman of a private club broke the law by hosting poker games without a gambling licence.

In his defence, the chairman is set to claim that poker is a game of skill and therefore does not require a licence under the Gambling Act, reports Poker Gazette.

Prosecution QC Graham Trembath said: “The essence of this case may well be…is poker a game of skill or is it a game of chance or is it a game combining skill and chance.”

An updated version of the UK’s Gambling Act received royal assent in 2005, with the government aiming for it to be fully implemented by September this year.

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Freelance writing for the gambling industry is the topic of the new book from Brian Konradt, detailing the experiences of himself and other poker writers.

Topics covered in the publication, dubbed Freelance Poker Writing, include the best ways to cover poker events, tournaments and other related topics.

Additionally, information is offered on how to sell writing to the media, including newspapers, magazines and websites in the gambling world.

“Both poker and casino-style games have been growing in popularity and so has the writing opportunities,” said Mr Konradt.

“Writing about poker and gaming is more than covering live poker tournaments and events - and it’s more than just writing about poker.”

He added that many of the writers he interviewed for the book are currently at the peak of their careers, exemplifying success “in every imaginable way”.

All players who were asked questions were forthcoming in their responses and wanted to share their experiences so that they could help other writers, Mr Konradt concluded.

Poker is the main focus of the book but it does concentrate on other casino games too, the author states on the publication’s website.
